Did you know that state and local governments are on track to collect more than 440 billion dollars in property taxes this year?
That’s the most ever –
Unlike any other tax – property taxes are based on fair- market value.
Even with real and personal property values dropping across the country – property tax collections rose almost 8 percent from 2008 to 2010 – according to the U-S Bureau of Economic Analysis.
In fact – property taxes have consistently risen since 1937.
American companies pay more in property taxes than any other state or local tax.
Corporations bear the brunt of these property tax increases – even as many struggle to stay afloat.
Just because the values on your real and personal property may have plummeted in the past couple of years – don’t be fooled into thinking that your property taxes will automatically decrease.
It’ll take just as much diligence in analyzing and appealing properties that are over assessed – maybe more.
If you need assistance in appealing properties that are over assessed – we can help.

Cooking Up Property Tax at Charlie Trotters

Welcome to Advantax.

Charlie Trotter’s is arguably one of the finest restaurants in Chicago – and the bill you receive at the end of the meal – is arguably one of the largest.
Seriously though – eating at Charlie Trotter’s is truly an amazing experience.
Each chef possesses at least one core competency – such as – desserts – salads – sauces – etc.
When we think of a core competency – we generally think of a fundamental knowledge – ability or expertise in a specific area.
Core competencies for a business can take various forms – including technical know-how – reliable processes – close customer relationships and more.
Simply put – core competencies are the things that you do better than your competitors.
Unless your company is in the property tax business – compliance and management of property taxes will likely not be one of its core competencies.
Even if a company is in the tax consulting business – it may not have a core competency in property taxes.
At Advantax – property taxes are not just another service we provide.
Property tax consulting and compliance are our only business.
If you need help managing your property taxes – we can assist you.

Who is Mowing My Lawn
PropTax Minute
Welcome to Advantax.

How often do you compare your options?
How often do you consider outsourcing a function versus keeping it inhouse?
On a personal level – when it comes to your lawn – should you hire someone to mow it?
Or should you do it yourself?
A good friend of mine was recently considering this.
For the past several years – his son had mowed the lawn – but after his son left for college – he soon realized a decision had to be made regarding the future of his yard. But before making a decision – he decided to take a deeper look at his options. He could mow the lawn himself. But what about the cost of the gas – equipment – grass disposal – and time – which in this case was about two hours a week?
On the flip side – when it comes to outsourcing the mowing – he found that lawn services seem to be efficient. They have all the equipment to do the job with speed and accuracy. And they seem to have reasonable prices. But how do my friend’s goals and costs fit into the picture? It may seem rather elementary – but it was very worthwhile for my friend to compare the two options.
When it comes to property tax compliance – how often do you compare your options?
For instance – if you’re currently doing property tax compliance in-house – what value might come from outsourcing it?
Conversely – what value might come from looking at the in-house option if you’re currently outsourcing your property tax compliance?
If you need assistance in comparing your compliance options – visit our website – at advantax.com – and we’ll be happy to provide you with a comparative cost worksheet as a starting point. Remember – the first steps are looking at the costs!

Say Goodbye to Midnight Buffet
PropTax Minute
Welcome to Advantax.

Caribbean cruises can be a wonderful way to see the world.
The beautiful islands, friendly people, fun excursions and non-stop activities.
One of best parts of taking a cruise though – is the chance to eat more food than you might have otherwise consumed in a month.
See – you can eat constantly on a cruise – as many meals as you want in a day.
For those of you who have cruised before – you know the pinnacle of the eating frenzy is the midnight buffet.
But tough economic times have led many cruise lines to rethink this gastronomic gorge fest.
So how does this relate to property taxes?
Well – spending for local governments has become like eating on a cruise ship.
The more they spend – the more they *need*.
It use to be they needed three meals a day – now they need five. This might explain why property taxes have risen every year since the 1930s – to an all-time high exceeding 440 billion dollars in 2010.
My favorite cruise line recently eliminated their midnight buffet. How many local governments are looking into eliminating theirs? If your company needs assistance in managing property taxes – visit our website – at advantax.com.
